Roberts-Betz to Open Two More Duplexes for Homeless

Heidi Roberts and John Betz  are opening two more, new collaborative housing duplexes within the next two months that will house 40 homeless.   Once again the couple is calling upon Venetians to help decorate.

April of this year the couple opened Weller House  for 28 people.  Venice Update article.    LA Times article.

“Both properties are newly constructed “monster duplexes” (5 bedrooms/3 to 4 bathrooms) that will house another 40 people in total,” wrote Roberts.

“And like Weller House, we’re partnering with SHARE! (Self-Help And Recovery Exchange).   We provide the fully furnished and outfitted homes and SHARE! provides the support staff necessary to help our tenants work through the traumas that caused them to be homeless in the first place, while supporting them in their new lives and connecting them to appropriate services to help them navigate their way back to health and stability.

“We’ve had an amazingly great experience with Weller House and SHARE! so far. It’s been a ton of work and at times, feels exhausting. But it’s been so awesome to be a part of a real solution to homelessness. Truly, SHARE’s collaborative housing model has proven to be the most effective, efficient and immediate solution to homelessness.

“When we launched Weller House this past spring, the Venice community really stepped up to help us — so many donated really lovely furnishings and household items and we bought around them (many, many hours at IKEA!). And as we look to furnish these four homes for 40 people, we could use some help with furnishings and decor to really make the houses feel like homes. We like to buy new beds and bedding but have a pretty long list of other needs. So if you have any of these items and feel compelled to donate them to one of our projects, we’ll be renting a truck in early September and can pick up at your place. We also have a storage unit in Venice and can meet you there anytime if you’d prefer to drop stuff off.

“Here’s our wish list: Full size washers/dryers (gas), Fridges, Kitchen island/work tables, Countertop microwave ovens, Couches/chairs, Side tables/coffee tables, Dining tables (big enough for 8-10), Desks and office chairs, Bookshelves, Nightstands,  Dressers,  Outdoor furniture, Gas outdoor grills, and miscellaneous decorative art, mirrors, objects that make a home feel personal – these items are so appreciated by the tenants and we share where everything comes from with them!”
