Two Homeless Measures Get Preliminary Approval

Two measures affecting the homeless received preliminary approval today in City Hall. Because they were not approved unanimously, the measures have to be read again before getting Mayor Eric Garcetti’s signature.

The Lavan injunction which requires a 72-hour notification to remove abandoned belongings from sidewalks and parks would be changed to 24-hour notification. All confiscated items would still be stored for 90 days. Bulky items too big to fit in a 60-gallon bin could be removed immediately without notification.

Councilman Mike Bonin proposed adding more homeless storage throughout the city. His motion was referred to the council’s new homelessness committee, which is slated to meet for the first time Thursday.
